Is Metformin Healthy For Diabetics With Heart Disease?

Is Metformin Healthy for diabetics with advanced heart disease?  Metformin has long carried a stigma with it that it was not a good idea to use as a medication in heart failure patients.  This has been my general opinion.  It has always been,”Metformin….oh that stuff is bad for your heart.”  So I was surprised to come across this news.

There was a study with 401 people with type 2 diabetes and systolic heart failure that were tracked for over 14 years.  The end result suggests metformin is actually safe, and even beneficial for such patients.

There are over 2 million with both diabetes and heart failure that this finding would benefit.  All those years of avoiding metformin for no reason…..

A 14 year study, that is substantial.  It is not like a six month trial or something, this looks like it may be an actual medical fact now.  This is a major finding in diabetes research and treatment. Metformin may be good for Diabetic’s Health.

Finally some good news for heart patients with diabetes.

I forget the details, but I read another story not too long ago about cancer cells in laboratory rats and metformin.  In that particular study, they found metformin helped to stunt the growth of cancer cells.  I am not sure how accurate the study was or how may rats they tested, but that is an interesting result considering the stigma of metformin.  Nobody really wants to take it, but most type 2s are on metformin.

I wish they would find a way to fix the gas / nausea side effect of it.  I take mine before bed so I am sleeping when it is the worst.  I am going to do a full story on metformin so keep an eye out.
