Diabetic Health Food Miracle- What is Fenugreek?

In my never ending quest for diabetes health knowledge I keep running into this weird thing called Fenugreek.  What the hell is Fenugreek?

Well that is exactly what I found out.  Here is what Fenugreek is.

Wikipedia says, “Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) is a plant in the family Fabaceae. Fenugreek is used both as a herb (the leaves) and as a spice (the seed). It is cultivated worldwide as a semi-arid crop. It is frequently used in curry.”

So that is very informative right?  What does this have to do with diabetes and health or more specifically diabetic health?

Most of all it is said to help control glucose levels in the blood (duh). It also is known to aid in lowering cholesterol, reduce the risk of heart attack (goes hand in hand with reducing cholesterol), it is especially helpful to women diabetics for a couple of reasons.

It is known to aid in milk production in women who are lactating, and also increases libido (alright!) and lowers many symptoms of menopause as well.

The seeds contain protein, vitamin C and potassium.

The Chinese use it to treat inflammatory conditions like arthritis.

The list of benefits goes on.

Of course there are two sides to every coin, a ying to every yang, a frick to every frack, a yatta to every yadda, etc….

Here are some cautions of “Fenugreek”

It may cause some gas / nausea (sounds  like our little buddy Metformin and his sidekicks, huh?).  Fenugreek should not be taken by pregnant women without doctors approval,  It can interfere with oral medications due to the high amount of fiber in Fenugreek.  There are more “side effects” but you get the general idea.  However, when used in small quantities, no side effects should be present.

I have never tried it, but it looks like any other green leafy herb.  I will try some and post my findings.

What a weird little herb, huh..”Fenugreek”…..
