American doctors have discovered that those who quit smoking are 70 percent more likely to develop diabetes than those who continue to smoke! (in the first six years) This is just awesome. I need a cigarette…..oh wait I don’t smoke anymore…..I quit….then I got Diabetes (I really did)…
They say the increased risk is due to the weight gain that typically happens when people quit smoking ( I thought it was from the excessive drinking I was involved in to calm my nerves in lieu of my cigarettes).
The story goes on to say not to use these findings as an excuse to continue smoking (why not?) I will take smoking over diabetes any day, In fact I think all diabetics should get a “free pair of new lungs coupon” the day they are diagnosed….hey, it is stressful having Diabetes.
Of course MSNBC has to cap off the story with the obligatory bit about how diabetes is reaching epic proportions with 180 million sufferers worldwide, and the forcast for the next 25 years has 44 million diabetics…with the cost of 336 billion a year for care! That’s is quite a chunk of change. (What they didn’t mention is that 335.5 billion was just for test strips….)
Finally, Tobacco is still the leading preventable cause of death in the world, killing more than 5 million a year.
The World Lung Foundation said smoking could kill a billion people this century.
Put that in your pipe and smoke it, just don’t stop once you start……..
